I love substitute teaching!
There is a need. A huge need in our rural communities. One that I didn't even know existed until I quit my job with the university (4-H) and started subbing. Our local schools need substitute teachers. I am sure many other areas are in dire need of these individuals as well.
I have been asked so many times, "How do you like subbing?" And my answer is always, "I LOVE it!" Here are 10 reasons why I do.
Okay, so I hope you are totally pumped and ready to go apply right NOW. If you are, read on to find out how to apply through the Clark County School District.
Okay, so that's that. I truly hope I have you pumped and YOU are ready to have some fun with our youth. If you have any questions, as always, feel free to comment below.
PS- I am in no way getting paid (or sub jobs) for this blog. I just want to share with you the joys I receive from subbing and want to encourage you to be able to join!
I have been asked so many times, "How do you like subbing?" And my answer is always, "I LOVE it!" Here are 10 reasons why I do.
- No stress- okay, maybe not "No stress" but let's be real here, we as subs go into a classroom that already has a routine down and we are merely mortals. There are always a few wonderfully honest students in the classroom that will help you along if you have questions on basic routines of the classroom.
- The staff are always happy to see you. Like really. No lie. I think the fact that they know another willing
victimvolunteer is taking the time to come and help at their school, they are happy to see you. - The teachers are so helpful! They understand that there are some routines that are not covered or are totally different in real life- think fire drill or hard lock down drill, and they are so helpful to make sure you know what to do. (Yes, the school district has training on this, but until you do it in a real classroom, it's totally different.)
- The kids are
hopefullyon their best behavior. This may be a far stretch for some classes but I have been very fortunate that I think their teachers have threatened them within an inch of their school being to be on their best behavior. - The lessons are planned for you. As a person who actually gets a weird joy from creating lesson plans, these are done in advance by the teacher. These are wonderful and usually have notes or hints throughout the lesson to assist with certain types of learners or where to stop and ask questions.
- I can sub when and where it works for me. I chose this as a side job when I quit my full-time job. I hate leaving my kiddos but the best part is that I don't have to very often. I have been blessed with amazing sitters for my kids all of their lives. It seriously takes a village! But I still need an out that
I don't spend money atI can get out of the house and still maintain sanity! All of you Mama's out there that LOVE being stay at home Mom, I salute you! - No classroom is the same. You know how I talked about the routines, the students in the classrooms are all so different. One week I was able to sub at the elementary school, middle school and high school. I loved every tiring minute of it! Such variety of learners and abilities!
- I get to know the students on a name basis. I have been blessed with the ability to (creepily) remember names. Like really well. I always feel like I have to not be so creepy when I meet people that I can remember their name and weird details about their life that they told me, but in the classroom- this is an asset! I get to know these kids and in turn, get to know about their family or personal interests. This is so fun and we have amazing kids in our schools!
- I get to give back to our community. I love this valley, I know I've said that a LOT in this blog but anyway that I can give back to our valley is the best way. I may not be doing a lot but when teachers have been in a bind for whatever reason, I am thankful that I can help in such a small way in anyway.
- I have been able to get inside our education system. Okay that sounds creepy, but I have really enjoyed watching and learning from our amazing teachers and staff. You always hear about how hard these educators work, but to be able to watch them interact with our youth is seriously heartwarming and inspiring. They are truly making a difference for our future!

If you are wondering what is the catch. What is required of yourself to be able to be qualified? There are a few different things required.
To be able to be a substitute teacher you are required to meet the following qualifications:
Minimum requirements for being a Substitute Teacher
- Bachelor's Degree or:
- The State of Nevada requires that a holder of a substitute license has a minimum of 60 semester credits of overall college/university level course work. Quarter units can be multiplied by 2/3 for equivalent semester credits.
So you may not fit into this one. PLEASE do not get discouraged. I do not have my bachelor's degree, I am still working on it (11 years running), but I do have the necessary credits. However, there is still another option to be able to help our schools. Please be mindful, you do have to be able to pass a background check to be able to be in our schools.
There is also a huge need for support staff subs. Like I was again in shock that there aren't more folks out here doing this! It's super easy and definitely in need. I haven't been able to do it yet :( I have called the sub services at CCSD to see if I can get this license too but haven't heard back. (Grrrr!) Anyway, this looks like a lot of fun and I can't wait to be able to sub for these individuals one day.
Minimum requirements for being a Support Staff Substitute
A minimum of a High School Diploma/GED is required to qualify to be a Support Staff Substitute.
Official High School transcripts must be submitted to Substitute Services at the time of application. A Diploma may also be accepted as long as it is the original. Copies will be made and originals returned.
